Expanding Relations with Four Companies Two new on-site tenants and two new affiliates
CrossRate Technology is working to improve America's
security. The United States infrastructure including
telecommunications, power delivery, military systems,
maritime/air/land navigation, broadcast television, the internet,
and financial systems all rely on the Global Positioning System
(GPS). According to U.S. government studies the GPS system is
vulnerable to intentional and unintentional disruption. To solve
this problem CrossRate Technology is developing integrated GPS/Loran
receivers which provide users a completely independent, redundant
source of information. The firm was started at the Drexel University
business incubator in Pennsylvania by Zach Connover, an Islesboro
native, and he is now moving back to Maine. After starting with MCED
as an affiliate firm, CrossRate will be moving on-site.
Future Fuel Technologies was started by Frank Norman of
Lewiston. The firm has a fuel additive that is proven to reduce
emissions and increases fuel mileage for transportation uses. The
product is patented by the U.S. Government and is certified for sale
by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. FFT is also
developing an industrial product that shows promise in large boilers
and in home heating applications. Reports have been received of fuel
consumptions reduced by 11% in large boilers and as much as a 19%
reduction in home heating. After starting with MCED as an affiliate
firm, FFT will be moving on-site.
New Hope Products Company, Inc., a product development
firm in Biddeford, has entered the affiliate program with a project
called iCubis. NHPC is owned by P. Joseph Shumaker Jr., and it won a
MTI Seed Grant to market test the iCubis concept - a web-based idea
post and search system which protects the posted ideas and creators
while creating industry attention for the independent inventor,
creator and person with special creative talent. NHPC has several
licensed game products on the market including SNAP, TRI-WORDS,
HOLEY COW, I SPY IN COMMON and I SEE YOU.
Wildfire Human Powered Vehicles was started by Ethan Davis
of Biddeford and has joined the MCED affiliate program. This firm is
working towards the manufacture of a type of human powered vehicle
called a velomobile in the state of Maine in partnership with a
velomobile manufacturing company in the Netherlands. Velomobiles
offer a non- polluting, health promoting means of transportation
with superior weather and crash protection, and much improved
aerodynamics over a conventional bicycle due to the use of a
composite body which encloses the driver.
MCED tenants have office/lab space a the Center and receive a
variety of services through the Center, including one-on-one
professional consulting services from on-site and off-site experts.

Lunch & Learn on December 17 - Cohesive Teams
Programs noon to 2:00 pm at the Three Adams St, So. Portland
December 17 - "Developing a Team for Your Success!" Lunch
& Learn with Meriby Sweet of the Maine SBTDC You may have the
latest and greatest technology. You have identified strong market
potential. The key question is: Do you have the right people in
place to commercialize that idea and technology successfully? The
individual who developed the technology is unlikely to be the
individual who can successfully get it to market. Investors,
especially, say, "Bet on the jockey, not on the horse." They like to
see "jockeys" on management teams with a track record of successful
commercialization. If you aren't that jockey what are your options?
This seminar discussed assessing the strengths and weaknesses of
your team, and developing solutions for building a team that will
lead your company across the finish line to commercial success!
The Lunch & Learn Series is at noon to 2:00 pm at the MCED -
CEE, 3 Adams Street, South Portland. An average of 20 business
leaders attend each meeting, and we look forward to your
participation. To register, please send an email with your name and
address to John.Ferland@ceemaine.org
