First New Tenant of 2005 & New Grants

Identity Cops, which started in Cape Elizabeth

Identity Cops Inc. developed an innovative, web-based technology to prevent and remedy identity theft and electronic privacy invasions. It is the only technology of its kind, taking a preemptive step to search for all potential sources of privacy invasion and prevent identity theft from causing harm.

Through this technology, Identity Cops is tackling a very serious and growing problem. Their patent pending computer technology searches hundreds of electronic databases, identifying potential security breaches. It then automatically notifies subscribers when they may be at risk and provides automatic and affirmative remedial options.

Lunch & Learn Workshop Series at the Center

Sponsored by Norway Savings Bank

The MCED is pleased to recognize Norway Savings Bank as the sponsor for the Center's monthly Luncheon Workshop Series for 2005. The series was initiated several years ago as a way to build ties among entrepreneurs in the Portland area while also providing useful information on business practices, growth strategies, and business management.

Wed., Feb. 16 - Business Mentor Relationships for Start-ups (John Ferland, Director of the Maine Center for Enterprise Development). Our clients have raised over $5 million in the last three years. They have research and development relationships with eight university R&D programs, two federal agencies and one federal laboratory. Many of these companies have succeeded because of the right relationship with a mentor.

This workshop will discuss opportunities through the incubation program to connect with resources such as the Small Business Development Centers, the University of Southern Maine School of Business, the MIT Club of Maine and the Maine Technology Institute's Tech Tracker program.

Upcoming Workshops
Wed. March 16 - Wow! Investor Presentations
(Patrick Martin, Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership)
Wed. April 13 - Promoting Your Company's Value - Steps to Success in Technology PR (Alison Harris, Harris Media Services)

Environmental & Energy Tech Council Breakfasts

Program 7:30 am at Bernstein Shur Sawyer & Nelson

February 17 - Keynote Speaker is Kevin Roche, the General Manager of Regional Waste Systems (also known as RWS), with 62 employees and a $24 million operating budget. RWS is a non- profit solid waste management corporation that serves 27 cities and towns in Cumberland, Oxford, and York counties in Maine. The waste transported to the facility located off outer Congress Street in Portland is incinerated to create electricity, which then is sold to Constellation Energy Group. RWS also has an extensive recycling program, with more than 100 recycling containers in more than 60 locations.

Roche joined RWS in September 2004. He has more than 15 years of experience in solid waste and recycling in both the public and the private sector. In his last position, he served as Deputy Commissioner of Public Works in upstate New York's Broome County, where he managed solid waste operations that included a 900-ton per day landfill and an $11 million budget.

The program will begin at 7:30 at BSSN's office at 100 Middle Street in Portland. Please register early, as the forums are quite popular. Admission is $15 ($5 for E2Tech Council Members). Payment can be made at the door the day of the event. To register for the event, please email John Rooks at jrooks@rookscom.com.
