2nd Annual
National Entrepreneurship Week
As proclaimed by Governor John Baldacci, Maine
celebrated and recognized the 2nd Annual National
Entrepreneurship Week the last week in February.
There were over 40 activities around the state
hosted by various organizations offering
entrepreneurship education programs and
preparation to our youth and adults for
careers in the 21st Century. Entrepreneurship is a driving force
in the U.S.
economy. During the past 15 years, businesses less than
five years old accounted for about 70 percent of
the net job creation. To maintain America's edge as an
entrepreneurial society, more Americans
in the future will need to generate new ideas and
better innovations to keep pace with the large populations of educated citizens in
emerging and globally savvy economies.

BUSINESS START-UPS: The purpose of business incubation is to increase the success rate of start-up companies. National research studies have found that about 75% of new businesses fail during the first 5 years. On the other hand, nearly 90% of companies that experience incubation succeed over that same time frame.
The Maine Center for Enterprise Development provides mentoring, technical assistance, and assistance with early stage capital. Our job is to help new and young firms commercialize technologies by systematically assisting businesses with intellectual property and business plan needs, R&D activities, early stage financing and product commercialization.
