News

January 2008: the USM SIFE team competed in the fourth annual Duel on the Heights. This event, hosted by Boston College's SIFE team in cooperation with the SIFE team at the University of Arizona, pitted teams from around New England in a financial planning competition around a cast study of a family with financial issues. Teams had 36 hours to prepare a presentation that showed how the family could improve its financial situation to a panel of Boston-area judges. The winning team went on to the Duel in the Desert at the University of Arizona, a competition funded by the non-profit organization Take Charge America.

USM SIFE has competed in all four of the Duels hosted by Boston College. This year's team was seniors Khristopher Lalemand, Sara Willey, and Kelly O'Connell and junior Jason DeCampos.

Feb 2008: The group hosted several projects at USM as part of the 2008 National Entrepreneurship Week in Maine. The projects included a market simulation for high-school students enrolled in Junior Achievement, and a seminar on Insurance Fraud.

April 2008: The USM SIFE team was named champion of the SIFE USA Regional Competition held in Providence, RI.  A panel of business leaders named it the champion for the team's year-long community outreach service projects. In one of the projects, USM students taught and mentored juvenile detainees at Long Creek Youth Development Center in job hunting, financial literacy and entrepreneurship skills. The team will advance to the National Exposition in May in Chicago.

 National Entrepreneurship Week

As proclaimed by  Governor John Baldacci, Maine celebrated and recognized the 2nd Annual National Entrepreneurship Week the last week in February. There were over 40 activities around the state hosted by various organizations offering entrepreneurship education programs and preparation to our youth and adults for careers in the 21st Century. Entrepreneurship is a driving force in the U.S. economy. During the past 15 years, businesses less than five years old accounted for about 70 percent of the net job creation. To maintain America's edge as an entrepreneurial society, more Americans in the future will need to generate new ideas and better innovations to keep pace with the large populations of educated citizens in emerging and globally savvy economies.

BUSINESS START-UPS: The purpose of business incubation is to increase the success rate of start-up companies. National research studies have found that about 75% of new businesses fail during the first 5 years. On the other hand, nearly 90% of companies that experience incubation succeed over that same time frame.

The Maine Center for Enterprise Development provides mentoring, technical assistance, and assistance with early stage capital. Our job is to help new and young firms commercialize technologies by systematically assisting businesses with intellectual property and business plan needs, R&D activities, early stage financing and product commercialization.
